Future Fair’s Second ever In-Person Edition Levels Up

Future Fair’s second in-person edition defied conventions of the sophomore slump by connecting new and established artworks in a variety of voices with an engaged and serious collecting public, ready to purchase immediately.
The excitement at Future Fair’s 2022 was palpable–50 exhibitors and thousands of art aficionados gathered at BLACE’s 22,000 square foot Chelsea Industrial building over a span of four days, filling the ground floor with curiosity and conversation. With Future Fair’s unique spirit of collaboration in the air, novel connections were made between artists, dealers and buyers every which way you turned, an inspiring sight as the fair stepped into its second ever in-person installment with a profound welcome from the art community.

CURATED BY JULIA HANEY MONTANEZ
Alien Days, an in-show design exhibition curated by Julia Haney Montanez, debuts at the fair and features eight studios whose experimental practices in process and materiality advance the appearance and potential of collectible design. As the curator notes, “This show blends my two loves of innovative, emerging design and the traditional foundations of interior design to create a space that feels alien, yet welcoming. We are not looking into the future, but rather at a parallel reality of singular design works in the traditional context of a living room, thus adding familiarity among otherworldly examples of the current collectible design movement.”

RAFAEL FLORES
Rafael Flores is an arts professional and collector based in New York City. He currently works as the Strategic Programs Manager for Meta Open Arts, where he develops global partnerships that drive innovation at the intersection of art, design and technology. Previously, Rafael served as the Director of Corporate Relations at the Brooklyn Museum and led partnerships at institutions such as Park Avenue Armory and the Guggenheim Museum.
Rafael is passionate about supporting artists from the Asian & Pacific Islander (API) diaspora, and together with his partner Matt, collects work from emerging API artists with a focus on painting. As a proud resident of Brooklyn, Rafael is a member of the Brooklyn Museum’s Young Leadership Council as well as the International Studio and Curatorial Program’s Young Patrons group. PHYLLIS HOLLIS
Phyllis Hollis is a patron of the arts and an advocate for underrepresented BIPOC Artists, Female Artists and Art Professionals. Her podcast and social media platform, @Cerebral_Women, offers unique content created to engage art enthusiasts, and connect with the broader art world.
She seeks to engage and educate those interested in cultural initiatives supporting underrepresented artists and promoting greater equality and equity within the visual arts community.
Hollis is a trustee of GuildHall of East Hampton NY, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture NY, and the School of Visual Arts Alumni Society NY. She is a member of the MoMA Black Arts Council executive committee. She has a proven track record of successfully driving DEI initiatives and programs. THE HERE & THERE COLLECTIVE
The Here and There Collective (THAT Co.) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Founded in January 2021, THAT Co. was born out of a series of studio visits that took place over the pandemic. A common refrain kept appearing in those conversations — one where artists were navigating issues of identity in their practices but struggling to find references that looked like them or peers to connect with. Since then, they’ve stayed committed to uplifting and connecting contemporary artists from the Asian diaspora while building a lasting community highlighting representation in the broader art ecosystem. AFRODET ZURI
Afrodet Zuri is a philanthropist, art curator, art dealer and writer. She moved to New York over a decade ago to pursue her master’s degree in Contemporary Art at the Institute for Art at Sotheby’s.
She is the founding Co-chair of Storm King Circle, the young patrons group for Storm King Art Center, a founding Contemporary of the Whitney Museum as well as a founding member of the Patron Committee for Fotografiska. She has curated numerous exhibitions in the traditional art world, including a retrospective that closed this past June at the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow and she curates the art all year round for the Four Seasons Beverly Hills in Los Angeles.
